Bookshops line the streets of Scotland’s National Book Town

In Wigtown spend an easy day browsing through the shelves before stopping in our restaurant for refreshment. There are around 20 book related businesses around the community, which hosts a book fair in May and a literary festival in late September.

Bladnoch Distillery and Visitor Centre

Bladnoch Distillery, close by Wigtown, is Scotland’s most southerly distillery, dating from the early 1800's. Learn about the traditions of making whisky on a 'whisky tour' and enjoy a charming riverside and woodland walk nearby.

Golfing

As well as a wide choice of Golf courses in Dumfries and Galloway Wigtown itself boasts a splendid 9 hole course. There are other courses nearby at Newton Stewart, Glenluce (18 hole) and a 9 hole links course by the sea at Monreith. Fishing

Plenty of opportunity for fishing in the area both coarse, game or sea at Bladnoch, the Galloway Forest Park Lochs or sea fishing at Port William or the Isle of Whithorn. More information at Bladnoch Distillery nearby or see Galloway Angling for more information.

Wigtown County Buildings

Just a short walk from Glaisnock House lie the County Buildings restored to their former glory with a viewing room overlooking Wigtown Bay. Here you may see the nesting Ospreys via the cctv link. Down by Wigtown harbour there is a bird hide overlooking the recently created wetlands.

Whithorn, St. Ninian and the cradle of Christianity

Visit the museum that tells the story of the local community and the part it played in the evolution of Christianity in Scotland. The visitor centre includes an audio-visual presentation and exhibition, as well you may tour of the excavation site.

Garlieston, Rigg Bay, Kilsture Forest

A short drive south on the road to Garlieston take a stroll through Kilsture forest, a host of bluebells in the Spring. Visit Galloway House Gardens and continue on through the Gardens to the beach at Rigg Bay. There is a pleasant walk from Rigg Bay to the ruin of Cruggleton castle along the coast. There is also tank and heavy vehicle driving to try at Galloway Tanks near Garlieston.
